Imaging for Windows 95, from Wang Laboratories, is an elegant little 32-bit program that lets you pull images from any TWAIN or TWAIN32 device, and import and export them in TIFF or fax format, with everything from a freehand scribble to electronic sticky notes attached. Best of all, it's free, downloadable in multiple languages, from Wang's Web site (http://www.wang.com) or from Microsoft's (http://www.microsoft.com).
Wang officials say the utility will be bundled with future Windows 95 releases, although there's no other offline distribution method yet.
Larger, feature-rich applications such as Photoshop may take longer to perform simple tasks; if you're just looking to grab graphics you'll do well with Imaging for Windows 95.
The program offers full help, a customizable toolbar and MAPI connectivity, which lets you mail or fax images as well as save them.
It provides the basics: cropping, adjusting resolution and compression, and working with multiple pages in a single file. You can zoom in and out of any image by nearly unlimited amounts. A split-screen thumbnail/close-up view mode lets you adjust the size of the window and thumbnails.
The software comes with OCXs that can be used with Visual Basic and other application development tools. That's a nice touch that lets programmers quickly slip TWAIN- and image-manipulation functionality into their software creations.
Wang's Imaging for Windows 95 is an easy, practical addition to your Windows 95 installation.
