Although it makes its debut as a Windows 95 application,
IBM VoiceType technology will become a principal navigation and
dictation tool in IBM's update to OS/2 Warp, now code-named Merlin.
(One difference between the two: To get the system's attention
in Win95, you say, "Wake up"; in the OS/2 version, you'll
have to add, "Please.")
IBM is also offering aggressive pricing on its software
developer's kit, and a wealth of information at its Web site,
http://www.software.ibm.com/workgroup/voicetyp.
Equally aggressive, Kurzweil is offering Web surfers
free copies of VoicePad, its voice-activated version of Win95's
WordPad. To download yours, visit the Kurzweil Web site,
http://www.kurzweil.com/pcapps/voicepad/.
The program comes with a discount offer for the same microphone
headset you'll find in the packaged version.
