Shy Guy

Back in the early '60s, my fellow first-graders and I were terrified by charming little government-produced films that told us how to "duck and cover" to avoid death by nuclear bomb. If you're captivated by such archival films, check out Our Secret Century, Archival Films from the Darker Side of the American Dream. These fascinating clips of celluloid propaganda, spanning decades from the '30s to the '60s, cover topics like "Shy Guy," "Safety for Susie" and "Valley Town," an ode to industrialization and mass production.

Nixon, The CD-ROM

Revisit the Greek tragedy that was the Nixon presidency with Nixon, the CD-ROM. Alexander Butterfield, deputy assistant to President Nixon, lends a you-are-there feel to the narration. The CD-ROM features 10,000 pages of previously unpublished documents, over 20 minutes of actual Nixon video clips, more than 700 historical photos, an interactive screenplay of Oliver Stone's controversial movie, and transcripts of the notorious Nixon tapes-including a tour of the infamous "tape room" in the bowels of the White House. Check the bios of all the President's men (300 of them). I would have liked a friendlier interface: The video clips are buried in the Press Room, for instance. And I was often overwhelmed with screen upon screen of gray text. But overall, this CD-ROM delivers everything you ever wanted to know about Richard M. Nixon, and then some.
