11/96 Reviews HW: APC SurgeArrest Notebook protector

Small Package Provides Big Protection

By Hailey Lynne McKeefry

A moving target may be harder to hit than a stationary one, but that doesn't mean your notebook computer is safer from power surges and electrical hits than your desktop system. American Power Conversion's portable SurgeArrest protects your notebook wherever you're working.

This diminutive surge suppressor weighs less than 5 ounces, including the provided six-foot telephone cord, and measures only 3 by 2.5 by 1.5 inches. The unit's concave top leaves room for plugging something into the outlet above it, so you won't have to unplug the lamp in your hotel room to use it. An LED on the SurgeArrest's front panel shows you the unit is functioning. If a surge occurs, the light goes out and the unit automatically disconnects the AC line, protect-ing your equipment.

On the front panel are an electrical outlet for connecting the notebook and three telephone jacks: one for the computer's modem line, the second for the phone cord from the wall outlet, and the third to protect a phone or fax machine.

APC's SurgeArrest can handle up to 400 volts, well above the normal 120 volts that come through an outlet. However, if the worst occurs and your system is taken down by a power surge, you are still protected. APC provides a lifetime warranty on the unit and a three-year Equipment Protection Policy for up to $3,500 in repair costs, or a replacement guarantee for the notebook if it's damaged by a surge or lightning strike.

The SurgeArrest provides protection from freak electrical accidents at little more than 1 percent of a notebook computer's cost. The Smart-UPS 700's display indicates line voltage, battery charge, device mode and load conditions.
