12/96 News: Microsoft Expands Workstation Limits
By John D. Ruley
Back in August, when Microsoft reversed its decision to impose
a 10-user limit on Windows NT Workstation NT 4.0 (though not in
the license), you might have wondered if the company was backing
down in the face of heavy pressure. Think again. In September,
the company actually extended the limit to all non-management
applications.
Technically it's now a violation to use NT Workstation as a workgroup
post office frequented by more than 10 people at one time-even
though NT-W 4.0 includes a workgroup post office. And if more
than 10 people simultaneously access a shared scheduling application-such
as, say, Microsoft's own Schedule+-they're breaking the contract,
too. The same goes for a UNIX-style ftp server, or network games.
Microsoft vice president Jim Allchin took full responsibility
for the new license restrictions. Despite considerable criticism,
the rules "will not change," he stated.
