12/96 Reviews SW: VoiceFX

By Hailey Lynne McKeefry

VoiceFX lets you add an amazing number of features-voice mail, fax mail, message forwarding, pager alert and fax-on-demand-to your computer, allowing you to handle multiple callers while you perform other PC chores. A thoughtfully designed interface and well-written manual make this program easy to use.

VoiceFX works with any Rockwell or UMC-based voice modem that allows voice and data transactions to occur simultaneously over the same line. Unfortunately, those are the only modems it will work with, and there are plenty of others that aren't compatible on the market. Make sure yours will work with VoiceFX before you buy.

VoiceFX can set up as many voice-mail boxes as you like, each with its own message, password and independently controlled message and call forwarding. VoiceFX offers extensive call-handling features, including call-blocking, multilingual options and a call log you can use to monitor phone usage.

Setting up a simple system-a single-line phone with only a few mailboxes, for example-is relatively easy. Setup becomes more complex for advanced call-routing schemes but, short of hiring a real, live receptionist, VoiceFX may be the most professional touch you can add to a home or small business.
