Shifting gears

I was blown away by Fred Langa's column about using Internet Explorer 3.0 to open Word or Excel files (Start, October). As soon as I read it, I had to try it, and to my amazement, it actually works. Wow! I know the term has been abused, but this is a paradigm shift. The concept that I can view, develop, edit or browse my files or Internet sites from one application on my desktop is incredible. More and more, I find the software I spend the most time using, configuring and tweaking is my browser. Being able to use it for most of my daily computer activity is a welcome innovation.
