Cable modems are an ideal Internet-access tool, and cable companies already have wires going into most homes. But according to the Consumer Electronics Manufacturers Association, a lot more has to happen before this market takes off. For starters, the cable industry may have to spend more than $1,000 per customer in infrastructure improvements, particularly to handle two-way communications.
