Yes Virginia, there is DVD-ROM. The Panasonic DVD-ROM, a kit containing a DVD-ROM drive and bundled software, was moved up from its scheduled midyear ship date. The drive plays discs with 4.7GB (single-layer) and 8.5GB (dual-layer) capacity, or the equivalent of seven and 13 CD-ROMs, respectively. The drive also reads CD-ROMs, and audio and video CDs.

The kit provides a DVD-AV decoder board for video, control panel application software to manage audio, video and data discs, a Windows 95 driver and cables. The decoder board supports MPEG I and MPEG II video playback, and Dolby AC3-ready, MPEG and Linear PCM audio playback. The board displays a full-color video overlay at any size and position on your monitor.

The drive has an ATAPI/Enhanced IDE interface and transfers data to a DVD disc at 1.3MBps through a PCI bus.
