InterCon's tcpConnect4 4.02 supplies organizations with a decent, comprehensive Internet solution no matter the type of desktop or the size of the user base. This integrated suite of Internet and TCP/IP programs provides e-mail, ftp client and server, newsreader, Web browser and terminal emulation. It's designed for use in cross-platform environments, including 16- and 32-bit Windows, as well as Macintosh. Under InterCon's flexible licensing system, you purchase key codes to activate only the specific programs you need. An assortment of Internet utilities is included: finger, host lookup and WhoIs. Most are simple, straightforward programs that do their jobs well. The suite's real star is the mail utility. You can establish lists of rules that indicate how incoming mail should be automatically marked, refiled, organized and forwarded. The newsreader is fast and easy to use. You're offered several options for posted messages, including signatures and "Organization" headers. The reader also gives very explicit and technical prompts when you're connecting, receiving or transmitting. InterCon's Web browser is a weak link in the suite. It doesn't handle frames or Java, although it does allow multiple connections. But the suite's biggest drawback is its lack of discrete 16- and 32-bit versions of some programs, most notably the browser. Still, for a corporate-desktop environment where integration across heterogeneous platforms is important, tcpConnect4 is worth a look.
