After many months of anticipation and many reams of coverage (in the computer press, at least) Intel officially unveiled MMX, the newest enhancement to the Pentium. Systems featuring the hot new technology-which effectively makes obsolete all PCs bought during, say, Christmas, which was the week before the launch-began arriving on store shelves almost immediately. They'll all carry an "MMX" label. As expected, Intel launched four new processors: 166MHz and 200MHz models for desktop computers and 150MHz and 166MHz processors designed expressly for notebook computers. The chips have twice as much internal cache as older Pentiums, a feature that provides a boost of at least 10 percent to 15 percent in the execution speed of virtually all Windows and DOS applications.
