Communications software vendors often throw a smorgasbord of comm utilities into the box with little regard for quality or integration. Hilgraeve's HyperAccess for Windows 95 and Windows NT does the exact opposite. It skips the fax manager and Internet tools, and instead gives you a first-rate terminal communications program. Unfortunately, you may miss some of those extras. The program is an excellent telnet client. It can be linked to your default Web browser, automatically connecting to referenced telnet sites on Web pages or opening the browser to embedded URLs within a telnet window. HyperAccess is Web-enabled with built-in support for Microsoft's ActiveX scripting (OLE automation) and Active Desktop. The ActiveX engine combined with Microsoft script interpreters lets programmers automate most telecommunication tasks. However, the terminal program has no support for RIP graphics, although you'll find a graphic-file viewer that supports the wheel-based features of the Microsoft Intellimouse and a full-featured host-mode (mini-BBS) program. HyperAccess' simple user record-and-playback capability is less powerful than similar macro features provided in competitors like Procomm Plus for Win95. You can record ASCII keystrokes for terminal input on a remote system and initiate uploads or downloads, but you can't capture keystrokes that activate local program menu options. That alone is enough to keep it off our Recommended List.
