Create Employee Policies...Safely

-- by Deborah K. Wong

When it comes to creating an employee handbook, what you don't know about employment law could hurt you. KnowledgePoint's Policies Now 5.0 points you in the right direction.

A simple question-and-answer process streamlines your selection of the approximately 80 employment policies that you may want to include in your company's handbook. Based on your responses, Policies Now produces a customized policy to reflect your company's needs.

You can maintain up to six separate handbooks for different employee groups. The multi-organization version allows consultants or companies with subsidiaries to create an unlimited number of handbooks to suit their needs.

Policies Now will also produce finished documents in HTML format for intranet publishing.

The software offers hotlinks to relevant Internet sites, so it's easy to find further information on employment issues.

A subscription to Update

Service will bring you semiannual software updates and a quarterly newsletter describing legal trends and the practical side of personnel issues. (The newsletter costs $79 for one year, $159 for three.)

Policies Now is not a substitute for legal counsel, and KnowledgePoint does recommend you have a lawyer review your handbook before you implement it. What keeps the software off our Recommended List, though, is its reliance only on California state law.
