Letters

I find myself chuckling whenever I read one of the outraged letters to the editor demanding the breakup of Microsoft (Letters, March). We who use UNIX are blessed, but also plagued. No one company completely dominates the OS. The tight competition has led to a situation where there is very little shrink-wrapped software, and standardization is only a dream. If you want a UNIX application, you have to write it yourself or pay a ton of money for the few apps that are available. Believe me, the domination of the Windows/DOS world by Microsoft has had many benefits to the average user.

I enjoyed Mike Elgan's column about Microsoft and the Department of Justice. It reminds me of a bumper sticker I saw at a gun show: "Government Policy: If It Ain't Broke, We'll Fix It Till It Is."

I don't believe Microsoft has the power to force computer vendors to put Windows 95 on every computer they sell. The vendors themselves decide to go with Windows 95 because it's a solid operating system with a vast consumer base. While Microsoft may be the devil tempting the vendors, the vendors are the ones lacking the faith to install a non-Microsoft product.
