Catch the Wave in Desktop PCs: MMX

Systems featuring Intel's Pentium processor with MMX technology are popping up all over the place. For example, the HP Vectra XA 5/200 system, available with a 200MHz Pentium MMX processor, ships with 16MB of EDO DRAM (expandable to 92MB), a 2.5GB EIDE hard drive and a 10/100BaseT Ethernet LAN adapter. The Vectra includes HP's TopTOOLS PC-management software and LAN power-on features that automate local tasks even when you're away from your PC.

The system features a Universal Serial Bus (USB), a 64-bit Matrox Millennium graphics card with RAMDAC and an 8X IDE CD-ROM drive. McAfee's virus protection software (WebScan and VirusScan) and Netscape Navigator 3.0 are also included.

Toshiba Equium 5200D

Known as a trendsetter in portable computers, Toshiba is currently making a statement in the desktop computer market. The Toshiba Equium 5200D includes a 200MHz Pentium

with MMX technology, 32MB of RAM, a 2.38GB hard drive, a 100Mbps Ethernet adapter, a 12X CD-ROM drive and USB. The system's graphics accelerator supports 3D acceleration, 2D capability and full-motion video at 30 frames per second. Toshiba's 15- or 17-inch Autoscan monitor is optional.

The Equium supports Desktop Management Interface (DMI) 2.0 and includes Intel LANDesk Client Manager 3.0. This provides LAN administrators with self-diagnostics, intrusion protection, thermal sensors and fan control for quiet operation and power savings. The Instant On feature allows the computer to "wake up" at the point where it was last used; password protection is activated when it is turned off.

Sony PCV-100 and PCV-120

The Sony PCV-100 and PCV-120 utilize MMX technology and ATI's Rage II 3D graphics accelerator. The 166MHz Pentium PCV-100 has 32MB of EDO RAM (expandable to 128MB) and a 2.5GB hard drive. The PCV-120 ships with a 200MHz Pentium, 32MB of RAM and a 3.8GB hard drive.

Both PCV models feature a 33.6Kbps DSVD modem, a 16X CD-ROM drive, MPEG decoding and a software bundle. For an additional $529, you can add a 15-inch Multiscan CPD-100VS multimedia display that includes built-in stereo speakers, a subwoofer and a microphone.

Micro Express MicroFLEX-MMX/200

It may not pump iron, but the Micro Express MicroFLEX-MMX/200 multimedia PC will show off its graphics muscle. Packed with a 200MHz MMX Pentium processor, the mini-tower system comes loaded with 32MB of EDO RAM (expandable to 128MB), 512KB of pipeline-burst cache and a 2GB hard drive.
