When you're in the market for a hard drive, capacity is important. Areal density refers to the number of bits per inch times the number of tracks per inch. Current technology reaches around 1GB (or 1 billion bits) per square inch of disk surface. It is expected that by the year 2000, areal densities of disk drives will range from 10 to 30 billion bits per square inch.
