Heroes or villains?

Jeff Byers' comments about software piracy (Dialog Box, March) should be required reading for all software vendors. What other product are we expected to buy with no idea (or guarantee) about whether it will work or do what we require it to? I always try to get a trial copy to see if a product works before I buy it. And yes, I do then actually buy the software I find useful.

I must take issue with Jeff Byers' column, "It's Okay to Steal Software." I feel the comments he made were off-base and unfounded. Software piracy boils down to one thing: stealing. Mr. Byers' comments sidestepped the fact that stealing is morally wrong.
