Ever wonder how data is accessed off a CD-ROM? Constant Angular Velocity (CAV) is a technique used when the disc rotates at a constant speed regardless of what area of the disc is being accessed. Since the motor doesn't need to change speed, the CAV is simpler to design and produce. However, data on inner tracks is accessed more slowly than data on outside tracks. Most CD-ROMs are laid out with data on the inner tracks first.
