The latest scuttlebutt in the NT industry... Scanning for answers: HP has finally developed NT drivers for the ScanJet 4c. Can OfficeJet support be far behind? Alpha avalanche: Unit shipments of the Alpha chip grew a mere 6 percent in Digital's most recent quarter, and Alpha revenue plummeted more than 30 percent because of steep price cuts. Hang on, Alpha! Taking "Merced" to task: Microsoft's NT team has reportedly encountered "task switching" problems while experimenting with prototypes of Merced, the forthcoming 64-bit chip from HP/Intel. The skinny on thin NCs: Only weeks after Oracle announced its first major "thin" network computer customer (floral vendor 1-800-FLOWERS), Microsoft disclosed that it's working on a sub-$500 "Windows Terminal" that links to NT servers. Time Warp: Former OS/2 Warp guru Wally Casey celebrated OS/2's tenth birthday by helping IBM create a software suite for NT (see "IBM Predicts Suite Success"). Plug and pray: NT 5.0's Plug-and-Play features will require a PC with a new system board interface, called ACPI (Advanced Configuration and Power Interface). PCs with ACPI won't ship until late this year. Breaking from the pack: Several of Novell's top minds have left the company and formed Timpanogas Research Group, a Lindon, Utah, company focused on NT clustering. Novell has since filed a lawsuit against the company for intellectual property infringement, among other things.
