In Pursuit of the Pocket PC

By Jim Forbes

Sprinting through the world's airports with a standard notebook PC may be great exercise, but if you already belong to a health club, you might want a portable that doesn't require so much heavy lifting.

Hand-held computers (sometimes called personal digital assistants, or PDAs) get better every year. The best ones cost $100 to $700, and although they won't pretend to serve as standalone machines, they will increase your desktop data's portability. Apple, Sharp, U.S. Robotics, Hewlett-Packard, Texas Instruments and Toshiba all plan to market PDAs that can share data with Win95 PCs. U.S. Robotics and Hewlett-Packard already offer cutting-edge, hand-held systems.

The $299 Palm Pilot 1000, from U.S. Robotics' Palm Computing Division, is a 3-by-5-inch machine that weighs only a few ounces and fits nicely in a shirt pocket. It has a 160x160 monochrome passive-matrix screen. It includes Pilot Desktop-plus a Windows-based personal information manager-a connector cable that attaches to a serial port at one end and a small cradle for the hand-held at the other. Palm Pilot uses the Graffiti handwriting recognition system. Simple controls let you synchronize data between the hand-held and a desktop or laptop.

Hewlett-Packard's $329 OmniGo 100 is the latest member of HP's highly successful hand-held product family. The OmniGo works with both pen-based and mini-keyboard data entry, and allows users to synchronize files with a client computer. It includes applications that facilitate tracking appointments, contacts, expenses and notes while away from the office.

Sharp recently launched a new addition to its hand-held computer family. The Zaurus 5700 features a backlit screen and makes it easier to transfer data between it and your desktop.

Some big-name notebook computer makers are working on notebook-and-hand-held bundles that will include everything you need to connect the two and synchronize files. At least three manufacturers plan to release such products by year's end.

Not to be outdone, Microsoft chairman Bill Gates says his company is working on hand-held operating systems and hardware, designed for use with a new class of ultra-small hand-held computers called wallet PCs. While it's unlikely that Microsoft is going to launch a product anytime soon, Gates is adamant that small hand-held computers will play an important role in the future, for both current mobile computer users and general consumers.
