Rapidly expanding storage capacities underscore the importance of efficient tools to manage all that data. NetWorker Client for Windows 95 lets you protect data on any Legato NetWorker storage management server including NetWorker for NetWare.

NetWorker Client for Windows 95 helps you back up and recover files manually. The client software comes bundled with NetWorker for NetWare, NetWorker for Windows NT and the ClientPack for PC Desktops.

Legato Systems and Octopus Technologies have also assembled two bundles for NT-based enterprise storage management. Super Bundle One combines the Octopus server with the Legato Data Backup Utility for NT. Super Bundle Two puts together two Octopus servers, the Octopus Automatic Switch Over (ASO) software and the NetWorker for NT Server Edition.

Storage for the Road

If you're using a notebook, additional storage always comes in handy. The CMS Easy Plug-Easy Go external hard disk and CMS Remove'n'Replace internal removable hard disk upgrades come in 810MB and 1.3GB capacities for most popular notebooks.

CMS offers removable disks for Compaq, IBM, AST, Hewlett-Packard, NEC and Toshiba notebooks. The 810MB disks feature 14ms average seek times and are capable of transferring data at up to 36Mb per second to storage media and up to 8MBps to buffer. The 1.3GB drive has a 13ms average seek time, and 44.9Mbps data-transfer rates to storage media and 16.6MBps to buffer. CMS claims a mean time between failure of 30,000 hours for the disk upgrades.

Incremental RAID

The economical way to set up mass storage is to start small, increasing capacity as needed. The CSS ProArray rackmountable RAID mass-storage subsystem for network servers simplifies the addition of more storage space as you go along. The ProArray supports RAID levels 1 to 5, and holds up to nine 3.5-inch half-height hard disks from 525MB to 4GB in capacity. The ProArray measures 7.7 by 19 by 17 inches and weighs 30 pounds without the drives.

Mass Storage In Brief

DiskExtender 3.0 works with Windows NT to speed access to network information while increasing security. It helps manage storage on erasable optical, CD-ROM and tape media. DiskExtender provides share-level security. It lets administrators remotely configure a server from any NT desktop and automatically schedule tasks such as database backups. Access DiskExtender as a drive letter or embed it into any business application.

The CD-Express Tower uses the company's Extender Plus to connect up to 56 CD-ROMs on one host adapter. The tower comes equipped with either 4X or 6X CD-ROM drives. They offer a data-transfer rate of up to 1MB per second, a 135ms random access time, 120ms random seek time and 256KB buffer. The tower supports CD-XA, CD-I, Video CD and Kodak Multisession Photo CD.

The Procom Technology LDLT280G holds up to seven 40GB cartridges for 280GB of data storage, and performs unattended backups at a sustained 3MB-per-second transfer rate. The DLT library subsystem connects to the network with a SCSI cable. It loads and unloads each cartridge in about 29 seconds, either randomly or sequentially. The drive takes a maximum of 68 seconds to locate any file on the 40GB tape. Procom claims the subsystem runs an average of 30,000 hours without failure.
