12/96 Reviews HW: VideoLogic GrafixStar 600

By Marc Spiwak

VideoLogic came up with the perfect mix for a fast and affordable 2-D accelerator when it combined the Tseng ET6000 chip with 2.25MB of MDRAM (multibank DRAM) and a 128-bit internal bus.

The bus can shuffle data between different parts of the card more quickly than a 64-bit card can, allowing for faster display. The use of two 1.125MB MDRAM chips doesn't improve benchmark scores, maximum resolution or color depth, but it does provide more off-screen memory for display of video windows. The GrafixStar supports resolutions up to 1600x1200 pixels, refresh rates to 200Hz and true color (at 800x600 pixels)-although not all at the same time.

The GrafixStar is an adequate choice for basic Windows computing and as an inexpensive way to upgrade your video.
