12/96 Reviews HW: Mind Path Wireless Keyboard

By Jim Forbes

If you're a victim of presentation wanderlust, you'll appreciate the freedom that the Mind Path Wireless Keyboard allows you. This keyboard uses an infrared beam and transceiver to communicate with the computer.

The transceiver connects to your computer's serial port. While the keyboard (powered by two AAA batteries) operates best when it has a direct path to the transceiver, it can work at an angle. The maximum separation for the two components is 30 feet.

The keyboard, while reliable, is a trifle mushy. You control cursor movement and mouse clicks using a combination of the Fn and arrow keys, which you may not find particularly instinctive.

The special-effects software originally developed for the remote control unit lets you use the cursor as an electronic spotlight, add colored shading for emphasis and assign special effects to function keys. With Mind Path's Wireless Keyboard, you'll do great presentations with an ad hoc attitude.
