December 1996 Reviews This Month
By James E. Powell
Hewlett-Packard's DeskJet 855Cse won kudos from this reviewer earlier this year. Its worthy successor, the DeskJet 870Cse, offers even speedier printing thanks to a faster processor. The 870Cse can print up to 8 pages per minute in monochrome and 4ppm in color, up from the 855Cse's 7ppm and 3ppm, respectively. My tests show you'll get fewer pages per minute than HP claims-but you'll have crisp, clear, clean text at 600x600 dots per inch.
You'll get excellent results with both premium and plain paper. Colors are bright and sharp, though magentas tend to blur slightly, even on HP's own Premium DeskJet paper. The 870Cse uses the company's Color Resolution Enhancement technology to achieve color at 600x300dpi.
The printer's appearance is virtually identical to that of the 855Cse, but it's slightly quieter; HP has made progress dampening the stacking mechanism that organizes output. The 870Cse handles paper sizes up to 8.5 by 14 inches and includes 126 TrueType fonts.
